The Cavs might not have the best start in the NBA. It is interesting to see how the Cavs developed their game and became one of the best teams in the NBA. Having players like Austin Carr, Bobby Smith, and Nate Thurmond changed the looks of the Cleveland Cavs back in 1975. In 2016, the Cavs managed to win their first NBA championship having players like LeBron James & Kyrie Irving. It does not stop here! Let us take a brief look at the history of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

History Of The Cavs:

The Cavaliers started their journey in the NBA in 1970 along with coach Bill Fitch and team owner Nick Mileti. The same season was the worst season for the Cavaliers having the worst record in the league.

In the 1971 NBA draft, the Cavs drafted star player, Austin Carr. The team slowly improved and won their first division championship. Fitch’s Cavs managed to get to the NBA finals after defeating the Washington Bullet. However, they lost to the legendary Boston Celtics. The Cavs continued winning and making it to the playoffs but got out in the first round.

Moving on, from 1978-79 to 1986-87 seasons the Cavs continued a losing streak. Soon after this, the Cavs hired Lenny Wilkens, who turned the Cavs into a defensive team. The very next season the Cavs won 42 games making it to the playoffs but lost to Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the first round.

In the 1988-89 season, the Cavs made their best record of 57-25. They faced Jordan and the Bulls yet again in the first round of the playoffs. The first round extended to a deciding game where Jordan ended the Cavs with a buzzer-beater which was later known as “the shot”.

The Cavs made it to the playoffs 5 times in six seasons between 1992 and 1998. Despite that, they could not manage to win the NBA championship. Later, in the 2002-03 season, the Cavs recorded the worst 17-65 mark in the conference which allowed them to pick first in the NBA draft.

The Turnover:

In 2003, The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted LeBron James and this is where everything changed for the Cavaliers.

The Cavs made it to the eastern conference finals and 2nd round of playoffs in the next season until James was traded to the Miami Heats and the Cav fell again. However, LeBron returned to the Cavs in 2014 along with new signing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. They posted the 2nd best record in the conference and managed to reach the NBA finals, and lost to the Golden State Warriors.

The 2015-16 season made history; the Cavs made a clinching comeback in the 7-game NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors. They lost the three games in the first four matches. With the help of Lebron and Irving going all out, the Cavs won the next three games and made history by winning their first-ever NBA championship.
